First Halo Wars DLC Announced

Given the long tradition of downloadable add-ons for the main Halo series, it should come as no surprise that Microsoft has revealed an upcoming DLC pack for strategy spin-off Halo Wars.

Dubbed "Strategic Options," the add-on includes three new gameplay types. "Keepaway" is your standard Capture the Flag gametype, "Reinforcement" pits you against an enemy army while forced to use an ever-changing set of units and "Tug of War" tasks you with building up a huge army faster than your foe, before using said army to assault your opponent.

Additionally, the DLC includes four new achievements, for a total of 100 gamerpoints:

  • “One and Done” (30 points):  Score the winning point in a game of Keepaway against Legendary A.I.’s
  • “Pull Hard, Pull Deep” (20 points):  Win and never trail in a Tug of War game
  • “Freak on a Streak” (20 points):  Gain at least 15 population from a single wave in a Reinforcement game
  • “Living Loving Bug” (30 points):  Obtain a Scarab during a Reinforcement game

No official release date or pricing details have so far been revealed for the DLC pack.

New Neverwinter Nights 2 Expansion Coming This Month

A new add-on for the already expansive Neverwinter Nights 2 will see release as a downloadable content pack via Atari's website starting April 29, the publisher revealed this morning.

"The Mysteries of Westgate" will set gamers back $10, and is scheduled to include "a 15+ hour campaign of high adventure," "non-linear gameplay," and four new creatures. As Dungeons & Dragons fans might have guessed, the add-on takes place in "the most infamous and corrupt city in the Forgotten Realms."

While Mysteries won't require gamers to own either theStorm of Zehir or Mask of the Betrayer expansions forNWN2, it is fully compatible with both, allowing players to use each expansion's added classes, skills and items.

Capcom Details Street Fighter IV's 'Championship Mode' DLC

Come April 24, Capcom will release the latest downloadable add-on for Street Fighter IV. Unlike past offerings however, the "Championship Mode" DLC will be free of charge and aimed directly at "serious players."

"Street Fighter IV’s new Championship Mode update expands on the fighting fun by offering players the chance to compete in tournaments and to watch replays of the best tournament matches," Capcom said this morning via press release.

Obviously the replays are pretty self-explanatory, but how will the DLC handle tournament play? Capcom explains:

Championship Mode offers you the chance to compete in 5 different grades of tournaments, creating the right challenge for players of every skill level. You’ll score Grade Points (GP) for tournament wins, and as your GP total grows, you’ll become eligible to enter into more exclusive tournaments. Winning tournaments will also net you Championship Points (CP).  CP are like “prize money” up for grabs in the tournament. The higher the GP skill of the players in a particular tournament, the bigger the CP prize!

The "Championship Mode" add-on is scheduled for release on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

Killzone 2 DLC Arrives This Month

Only four days after developer Guerrilla Games revealed the existence of downloadable content add-ons for Killzone 2, the developer has offered a release date: April 30.

Dubbed "Steel And Titanium," the game's first expansion includes two new multiplayer maps, dubbed "Wasteland Bullet" and "Vekta Cruiser."

The former finds combatants fighting their way through a bullet train, while the latter has "ISA troops boarding a vast ship with the goal to repel a force of assaulting Helghast troops while also protecting the cruiser itself from heavy Helghan fire."

The "Steel And Titanium" pack still lacks an official price point, but we expect to hear word from Guerrilla or publisher Sony very soon.

Atlus Unveils Downloadable Puzzler Droplitz

No longer content to push quirky roleplaying games and infinitely deep strategy titles, publisher Atlus has revealed Droplitz, a downloadable puzzle game.

The game, scheduled for release on the Xbox Live Marketplace, PlayStation Network, PC and iPhone platforms in "Q2 2009," seems like a cross between Hexic and Pachinko.

Have a look at Atlus' description:

Droppers at the top of the screen drip incessantly, slowly at first, then increasing in rate as you continue to play.  At the bottom of the screen are collectors intended to catch the dropping droplitz before they meet their gravity-induced demise.

In between the droppers and collectors is a play field of circular dials, each studded with a variety of pipe configurations.  Some are "Y" dials, others are "I" dials, and so forth.  Spinning with haste, you must make connections between the top and bottom of the screen, so that the droplitz, everyone's favorite free-flowing liquid, don't come to a splattery end.

If it still doesn't make any sense, Atlus has offered a nearly-one minute long trailer for the game, demonstrating its various gameplay modes and a decidedly Lumines-esque ambiance.

No price point or official release date has yet been established, but we expect more news soon.

Chinese Democracy Joins Rock Band Next Week

It took Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose and a revolving cast of musicians more than 14 years to release Chinese Democracy to the general public, but it will only take five months from its date of release for the album to appear in the Rock Band Music Store.

"Chinese Democracy, the sixth and most recent album from Guns N’ Roses, will be released in its entirety to theRock Band Music Store catalog of downloadable content on April 14, 2009," reads a press release issued by series distribution partner Electronic Arts on Friday morning. The missive fails to offer pricing info for either the album as a whole or its individual songs.

Axl Rose actually made mention of the upcoming Rock Band DLC release during a December 2008 roundtable interview, but the endless delays surrounding the album left even the most ardent Guns N' Roses fans smirking in disbelief at Rose's claims.

Now that EA has made things official however, I'll accept this news as exciting fact. Say what you will about Axl's ego, or how far the group has fallen since 1987's Appetite for Destruction, but I still very much enjoy Chinese Democracy.

CD could definitely use more Slash -- preferably melting faces while standing in front of a small desert chapel -- but then again, what kind of music would not benefit from having more Slash?

Developer Details Killzone 2 Add-on Content

If completing Killzone 2 left you craving more opportunities to slaughter Helghast troops, you'll be glad to hear that developer Guerrilla Games is officially working on downloadable additions for the popular PlayStation 3 shooter.

Herman Hulst, the managing director at Guerrilla, confirmed the news on the latest episode of Spike TV'sGametrailers. As per online shooter standards, the first DLC release (called "Steel And Titanium") is scheduled to contain new multiplayer maps.

The first is set on the cruiser New Sun which features numerous vertical planes, allowing players to sneak up on each other from above and below. The second map spreads combatants between two rapidly moving trains, and tasks them with finding and killing one another while avoiding a messy death on the tracks below.

No solid price info is offered for the DLC, but Hurst says players should be able to download the add-on from the PlayStation Network store sometime at the end of April.

Wipeout HD Update Adds Online Rankings, Spectator Mode

Tomorrow, April 8, will see the release of an update for PlayStation Network downloadable racing titleWipeout HD that adds a number of new options to the title.

Key to the additions are new online features that offer fans a more enjoyable multiplayer experience, including an online leaderboard and a spectator mode that offers players a chance to watch races currently in progress from around the world.

Additionally, on completing any online race, players are now awarded badges based on how they performed. As opposed to the standard gold, silver and bronze badges for placing in the top three finishers, these 33 badges award players for accomplishing certain feats during the race.

While Sony is mum on what each badge requires, expect Wipeout fans to have compiled comprehensive lists hours after the update goes live.

Yet again, only a day after I talk up Burnout Paradise's upcoming "Cops And Robbers" add-on, developer Criterion Games drops important new information, in this case, an official release date.

For those who missed our previous coverage, the "Cops And Robbers" add-on offers players a chance to drive specially designed cop cars, based on a wealth of models from around the world. It is scheduled for release on April 30.

Capcom Details the Bionic Commando Demo

Good news for those gamers eagerly awaiting the imminent demo for the new, 3-D Bionic Commando: Not only will it debut in "the coming weeks," it looks like it should be a lot of fun -- and a good introduction to the new game's mechanics.

Capcom's official word:

Focusing on Bionic Commando's exhilarating online multiplayer mode, the demo will feature “Vertigo,” one of the game's 16 multiplayer maps where 8 players will go head to head in an all out Deathmatch. But this is no ordinary Deathmatch. Swing through the air while showering your opponents with hot lead, use the grapple to zip to safety before a grenade explodes at your feet and laugh as enemies plummet from the tops of skyscrapers following a well aimed zip-kick to the chest!

Interestingly, the e-mail that carried that statement to my inbox this morning also states that the demo will "launch on Xbox Live" with no word of a PlayStation 3 or PC demo.

We expect a demo for the other versions will be available for download at some point, but that line leads me to suspect that the Xbox 360 demo will have a period of exclusivity, at the very least.

Capcom Refutes Resident Evil 5 DLC Controversy

Where once Resident Evil 5's alleged racist undertones fueled the fires of controversy, the game's downloadable Versus mode add-on has become the topic du jour in recent days. Initially, from gamers who said the company should not be charging extra for a gameplay mode that is so simple and basic that it should be included with the retail release of the game.

More recently, we've heard outcry from gamers who believe the content is already on the disc and that purchasing the DLC merely snags an unlock code instructing the game to access the otherwise hidden content.

Included in this latter group is gaming conglomerate IGN, whose April 7 story on the DLC includes the following:

The total download size for RE5 Versus Mode is 1.86MB. You are not, in fact, downloading the content from Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Network. Instead, you are downloading a key that unlocks content already on the RE5 retail disc. The same disc you paid $60 for a month ago.

Capcom, has repeatedly refuted these claims.

Most recently Christian Svensson, Capcom's VP of corporate development, said even the minuscule 1.88MB download size was to large to be a simple unlock key.

"Keys are 100 kilobytes or less. It is not a key. We have said in the past, it uses assets from the disc (like levels, models, audio, etc.) but the code is new and does not exist on the disc, Svensson wrote in a now-locked thread on the Capcom Unity forums.

Of all the voices weighing in on the issue, I think the idea posited by Variety's Cut Scene Blog is the most sensible. After establishing the few facts available to be argued, Fritz offers simply "Who cares?"

Call it apathetic if you'd like, but there are two underlying realities here, depending on what Capcom really has coded onto the disc, neither of which affect my life in any crucial way.

I'd be willing to guess they affect all of you even less.

Let's say Capcom is telling the truth. Those minuscule downloads simply apply new rulesets to existing art assets, thus creating the "Versus" mode. The addition won't affect how you feel about RE5 -- if you already own it, you're a fan of the series -- and Capcom will continue raking in huge sales figures for the title and its inevitable sequels.

If Capcom is lying, corporate pride almost definitely dictates that they can not admit to it, and at best people will become a bit more wary of Capcom's marketing efforts in the future. If you like RE5, you'll still purchase and enjoy the game, though you may not buy the DLC.

Either way, you, me and the rest of the world will have forgotten all about this fracas as soon as some member of the faceless public mob can select another corporate entity at random to rage against for perceived racism, communism, sexism, or pro-zombie sympathies.

Saints Row 2 DLC Delayed

If you planned to enjoy today's scheduled downloadable additions to Saints Row 2, you're in for a wait. Specifically, you'll be waiting until April 23.

The one week delay, revealed by the game's official website, may be bad news for SR2 fans, but there is a silver lining: Alongside the DLC's four new multiplayer maps (one of which, "Downtown," is pictured above), developer Volition has promised to include "additional clothing options" as well.

"I know seven days may feel like a long time, but I promise it will pass by quickly. While waiting, how about going on a hunt for the elusive Cabbit?" the site asks.

Wondering what the "Cabbit" is? Like its inspiration, Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row 2 is packed with bizarre Easter Eggs -- some of which are even seasonally appropriate.
