Action Games Improve Eyesight, Study Claims

Action games (specifically the violent shooter type) can improve a player's eyesight, according to a new study funded by the National Eye Institute and the Office of Naval Research.

University of Rochester professor Daphne Bavelier and her team have released findings that indicate "that action video games train the brain to process existing visual information more efficiently." This follows a 2007 study in which Bavelier found that such games enable players to more accurately see objects in a cluttered space.

The games, Bavelier belives, enhance a player's "contrast sensitivity," that is, their ability to discern differences between slightly different shades of grey within a given visual scene.

For the study, Bavelier and her team tested the contrast sensitivity of a group of 22 students.

Once that baseline had been established, the group was split in half. One group was tasked with playing Call of Duty 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004, while the other was asked to play The Sims 2 -- a game Yahoo News describes as "richly visual" but not requiring the same level of visual-motor coordination as the shooter titles.

After spending 50 hours with their assigned games over a 9 week period, the students' vision was again tested. Those students assigned to the action games showed a 43 percent increase in contrast sensitivity, while those who played The Sims showed no improvement.

Additionally, Bavelier observed a 58 percent increase in those who played action games regularly over those who play no games.

"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that contrast sensitivity can be improved by simple training," Bavelier told Yahoo News. "When people play action games, they're changing the brain's pathway responsible for visual processing. These games push the human visual system to the limits and the brain adapts to it, and we've seen the positive effect remains even two years after the training was over."

Shadow of the Colossus Movie in Development

A Sony Pictures film based on the critically acclaimed PlayStation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus is in the works, Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported Tuesday.

Ben Fritz of Variety's The Cut Scene blog reports that his friend Justin Marks, who wrote this year's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, is writing the script. Fritz gives us an insider's peek at how the game may be translated to the big screen:

I understand the folks working on the project are planning to have some of the characters who appear only momentarily in the game, such as those who try to track down and stop Wander, play bigger roles in the film. And despite the game's somewhat "artsy" cred, they're hoping Shadow will be a Lord of the Rings-style fantasy tentpole.

Fritz also points out that the movie has just started its process of development, which he calls a "first step" -- "very far from actually making it to the big screen." So it's not a sure thing, as of yet.

I'm sure many of you are torn in exactly the same way I am right now. On the one hand, Shadow of the Colossus is one of my all-time favorite games, and it would be great to see it get more mainstream exposure. On the other hand, videogame movies are usually terrible.

Teens Protest CoD: World At War's 'Animal Cruelty'

Breanna Lucci, a 19-year-old Massachusetts high school student, is deeply offended by the "animal cruelty" she sees in Call of Duty: World at War.

"Killing dogs as a form of entertainment ... over and over again. That's one of the objects of the game," Lucci told her local paper. "Parents need to know what they are buying their kids. Killing animals should not be a form of entertainment."

Lucci, the president of her school's Animal Rights Club, has crafted a petition and garnered "more than 100"signatures from her fellow students, in the hopes of forwarding the effort to
 Call of Duty publisher Activision.

Lucci says she first noticed the "animal cruelty" while watching her brother play the game. "My little 12-pound Pomeranian, Winnie the Pooh, is sitting next to him, and I'm thinking, 'This looks horrible!'," she said before adding, "My brother is a sweetheart. He won't be killing dogs after playing. But some people might."

I wonder if she grasps the irony of that statement.

Gaming Themes Added to Google's Home Page

In case Google's selection of customizable homepage themes doesn't properly express your personality, the search engine giant has just installed a new swath of themes including imagery from the world's most popular gaming series.

Included in Google's latest theme pack are images from World of Warcraft, Street Fighter IV, The Legend of Zelda (above), Tomb Raider: Underworld and Mass Effect 2 -- though the image from ME2 looks more like a scene from the first Mass Effect filtered through a haze of orange tint.

Users of any of Google's many services can alter the scheme of their customizable homepage by vistingiGoogle, clicking on the "Change Theme from classic" link in the top-right corner of the page, then using the "Get New Themes" link toward the center of that page.

Google currently offers four pages of gaming themes, so you should be able to find something you like.

EA, Starz Media Planning Dante's Inferno Animated Film

Following the success of the Dead Space animated movie, Electronic Arts and Starz Media's Film Roman have revealed a collaboration to produce an animated flick to tie-in with the publisher's upcoming Dante's Inferno.

Monday's official announcement describes the film thusly:

Just as the poem and game take players on a stunning journey through the nine circles of Hell, the Dante’s Inferno animated feature will also follow Dante as he travels through limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery in search of his true love, Beatrice. Both are based on part one of Dante Alighieri’s classic poem, “The Divine Comedy,” better known as “Dante’s Inferno.”

More interesting than simple plot details however, is how EA and Starz Media are approaching the project: Instead of simply handing the film's reins to a single creative team, the duo are "commissioning unique visions from multiple studios" with film credits ranging from Dead Space Downfall to Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron and The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Gaming Blamed for Childhood Finger Deformities

Author Mike Tomich believes videogames can cause finger deformities among young children, reports GamePolitics.

"Children develop the injuries because their bones are too soft and readily yield to the strong repeating forces," says Tomich, a self-described "quality engineer" and author of the book Our Silent Epidemic. "The permanent and accumulative damage from these forces is silently inflicted without pain because of the numbing effects they deliver to the soft bones."

Tomich believes his repeated attempts to convince the U.S. Senate to pass a bill which will lead to the study of the issue have been stymied by the gaming industry.

"We spoke with Senator Ted Kennedy's Office today and they said Senate bill S.948-CAMRA Act which was going to study children's health, including the effects of video gaming, will have to be submitted for the 8th time next year. Senator Lieberman's Office informed us that Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming) killed the bill for it's 8th year because he didn't want it passed," Tomich wrote on his website.

"The Video Gaming Industry wants Senate bill S.948-CAMRA Act to go away forever. Did you know that on 11-14-08 Microsoft Executives visited Washington and discussed children's finger injuries from video gaming and S.948 is now being stalled? The Nintendo Wii is suppose to replace the damaging game controller, but the Wii is equally damaging," he adds.

Casting Call Seeks Punch-Out Lookalikes

"EDP Casting is currently looking for Real People to portray characters from the classic video game PUNCH-OUT," read a recent craigslist ad from the New York City area.

Though the ad has since been removed from the popular site, while it was still posted, it was very specific about what sort of people EDP was seeking:

PISTON HONDA - Asian guy, preferably Japanese, late twenties to mid thirties. In good physical shape. In your submission please list your ethnicity, i.e. Chinese, Korean, etc. and please state if you have any martial arts or kick boxing experience.

KING HIPPO - Heavy set, bald, Polynesian, Samoan, Pacific Islander or Caucasian guy. 30 to mid forties

LITTLE MAC - Caucasian, 18 - 25yrs old NY native. 5"9 and under with dark hair. Real fire in his eye, young boxer type. In good physical shape. Please list in your submission if you have any boxing experience.

GREAT TIGER - Indian, Pakistani, Middle Eastern, late twenties to late thirties, fighter type.  In good physical shape.

I attempted to contact EDP this morning, to ask what they were casting for, and if the production company behind whatever they were working on had received the blessing of the notoriously litigious Nintendo to use the Japanese firm's intellectual property.

"Please do not run the story at all. We are done casting for this project," was the only response I received.

What do you guys think? Is this an ad for the new Wii game? A bizarre play? A Punch-Out-themed amusement park? I'm definitely hoping for that last one.

Laser Cutter Performs Super Mario Bros.Theme

Performing the Super Mario Bros. theme song is totally clichĂ© at this point, but I'm fascinated by laser etching machines -- especially those with a musical slant.

Coded by "Jed," a member of Toronto's HackLab collective, this performance was accomplished using the tones created by the activation of the laser cutter's motors. By perfectly timing each motor's spin-up and spin-down cycles, "Jed" was able to achieve an eerily perfect rendition of the classic gaming tune.

Now if only they could program the machine to play this tune while etching a Mario-themed laptop design.

Another musical variation… [HackLab.to, via Offworld]

Molyneux: Games Will Offer 'The Greatest Story Ever Told'

Fable creator Peter Molyneux has a lot of faith in his chosen medium, telling videogaming247 that games have the capability to tell "the greatest story ever told."

"The greatest story ever told? I think it’s going to be in a computer game,” Molyneux told VG247 recently. “And I think that if I play the greatest story ever told in the same game as you play it, your greatest story is going to be different to my greatest story."

"That ambition to do that, to write that story, or to write that game that allows you to experience that story, is definitely something Lionhead Studios wants to do," Molyneux adds.

You can't really argue with this kind of prognostication, but it would have been nice had Mr. Molyneux offered us a date range for this "greatest story." Is this tale going to hit shelves in a year? Ten years? One hundred years? We're going to need time to prepare society.

Fan Crafts Intensely Detailed MadWorld Figurine

Hopefully Sega is simply too busy planning a line ofFighting Vipers action figures to bother with anything else, otherwise there is no excuse why the company was beaten to the punch by one talented MadWorld fan and his excellent re-creation of that game's protagonist.

I'm especially impressed by the attention to detail shown in this figure. MadWorld's monochromatic color scheme is perfectly recreated here (notice the light reflecting off of Jack's boots), if not the game's hyperkinetic action -- a probable impossibility given the inanimate medium.

Unfortunately, the commentary left by the creator on his DA page offers little insight into his process. Aside from adding that the saws are attached by magnets, we don't even learn what the figure is made from.

After you all scamper over to his gallery to see the remaining pictures, do any of you creative types care to hazard a guess?

Video Games Live Joins E3 2009 Closing Ceremony

E3 2009 is being marketed as a return to its bombastic, festival-esque roots -- an effort that now includes a performance by the world's premier gaming-themed orchestral concert, Video Games Live.

Come 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 4, VGL will "be performing under the stars" at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre as part of E3 2009's closing ceremony. As the company has not played in Los Angeles in "over 2 years," VGL's official site draws attention to the new material it has since added, including tunes from Diablo III, World of Warcraft, Chrono Trigger and Mega Man.

More intriguingly is a single sentence found at the end of VGL's announcement:

Because of the E3 convention, there will be a lot of very special guests from Japan and Europe in town for this performance.

Admittedly, the line is very non-committal, but given the number of high-profile developers scheduled to attend E3, and VGL's tendency to attract the biggest names in videogame sound design, I wouldn't be surprised if this show was the biggest event VGL holds this year.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Novel In The Works

This November, publisher Del Rey and novelist Raymond Benson are set to launch a novelization based on the Metal Gear Solid series. Instead of the recentMetal Gear Solid 4 however, the book is based on the now-9-year-old MGS2.

Benson, who is most famous for penning a number of James Bond novels (Zero Minus Ten, High Time To Kill), also wrote the tardy novelization of the first Metal Gear Solid -- released in May of 2008.

I've read some of Benson's work -- boredom on Transatlantic flights leads a person to seek entertainment wherever it may be found -- and I think this next novel will certainly be a cut above the normal game-to-novel translations. The man most definitely knows his way around a spy thriller.

But why now? Why didn't Konami make this happen almost a decade ago when it would have been much more relevant? Or are MGS fans that diehard that they'll still snap up anything related to the adventures of Solid Snake, no matter how untimely?
